ABOUT / CLUB INFO
In a rapidly evolving world, where technology and competition intertwine, The South Fayette Township School District Esports Program aims to provide students with an innovative platform to showcase their skills, camaraderie, and strategic prowess. Through interscholastic, competitive Esports, our teams tap into a realm that resonates with the digital-native generation, fostering teamwork, leadership, and adaptability.
The program was founded in the 2022-2023 school year by a passionate group of sixth grade students. With the drive and support of the students, families, teachers, administrators, and board of school directors, our High School and Middle School Esports Teams were created for the 2023-2024 school year. With hopes to win the PIEA (Pennsylvania Interscholastic Esports Association) State Championship, nearly 40 students in our Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Middle School teams will be competing in game titles including Rocket League, Valorant, Overwatch 2, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate through the Fall and Spring Seasons this school year. The matches will be held weekly in our brand new High School and Middle School Esports Arenas!
Through the leadership and guidance of a program director and coaches, the teams focus on nurturing the holistic development of the students. Through organized practices, matches, and collaborative problem-solving, students enhance their cognitive abilities, communication skills, and sportsmanship. The program transcends traditional boundaries and appeals to a diverse range of students.

GAME ON! ESPORTS COMES TO SFMS
Even before four sixth-grade students approached middle school administrators this fall to gauge interest in their school hosting an esports tournament, South Fayette school leaders were already working on a plan to bring organized, competitive video gaming to Lion Learners. The request by those middle school students confirmed what district administrators already believed – esports can foster teamwork, critical thinking, and inclusivity.
South Fayette Middle School Associate Principal Dr. Kevin Maurer is leading the district’s charge into the esports arena. Students who compete in video gaming are not in their rooms, isolated from others. Rather, esports fosters teamwork by bringing students with a passion for video games together in a supportive environment that builds STEAM-based skills and social-emotional attributes, according to the North America Scholastic Esports Foundation. Those attributes, including communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities, are what students need to thrive in school, careers, and life.
